    Expectation Formation in the Information System Development Process

    The concept of consumer expectations has been widely used by information systems (IS) researchers to explain the outcome of information system development (ISD) efforts (Suh et al, 1994; Lawrence and Low, 1993; Ginzberg, 1981). These IS studies assume that users are IS consumers. However, ISD is substantially different from many other product development efforts. Information systems are highly customized, requiring more user involvement in the development. Also, analysts and users can interact directly, rather than through indirect mechanisms requiringlimited consumer input such as marketing research, focus groups, and consumer attitude surveys. Therefore, the ISD process provides more opportunities to develop and manage user expectations. This fact has been overlooked by the IS literature, which mainconcern is in linking user expectations to perceived system performance. Based on this observation, this paper contributes by explaining how user expectations are formed and updated throughout an ISD process. Using the ISD model developed by Newman and Robey (1992), we conceptualize user expectations as two distinct constructs, desiredand predictiveexpectations (Spreng and Olshavsky, 1992), which are modified through a series of encounters and episodes

    Autobiographical Memory for Emotional Events in Amnesia

    This study investigated autobiographical memory for emotionally flavoured experiences in amnesia. Ten amnesic patients and 10 matched control subjects completed the Autobiographical Memory Interview and three semi-structured interviews which assessed memory for personal events associated with pain, happiness and fear. Despite retrograde amnesia for autobiographical facts and incidents, amnesics remembered a similar number of emotionally significant personal experiences as control subjects. Their recollections generally lacked elaboration and detail, but pain-related memories appeared to be more mildly impaired than memories associated with happiness and fear. The findings are discussed in relation to recent views on the relationship between affect and memory

    Geomorphological evolution of the calcareous coastal cliffs in North Iberia (Asturias and Cantabria regions)

    This paper presents an analysis of the main morphologies observed in the coastal cliffs of northern Spain (Asturias and Cantabria regions). The objective of this contribution is to establish a hypothesis on the origin and evolution of this rocky coast, as well as to present a detailed inventory, to characterise quantitatively and qualitatively singular morphologies and to highlight the geological heritage of this protected coast. The evolution process starts with the formation of an ancient coastal planation surface characterised by a flat morphology caused by regional mainly uplift and to relative sea level falls. Afterwards, wave erosion processes would have started eroding the cliff foot and simultaneously, karst activity produced some exokarst morphologies (sinkholes, karren, etc.) through stratification and fracturing network, while the underground drainage systems produced some caves and chasms. In the following step, corresponding to the last glaciation from the paleoclimatic point of view, sea level fall together with a deepening of the fluvial network caused the preservation of the existing caves and chasms and the generation of new ones at a lower level. On the other hand, dissolution processes on limestones created sinkholes in those areas characterised by alternating layers of limestones and marls, generating collapses. When the sea level reached the maximum height during the Holocene a new erosion cycle of the coastal cliffs began. As a consequence, new landforms and processes were produced, like bays, caves fillings, and intrusion of new sediments in small confined estuaries. In these areas, other types of morphologies associated with the last sea level rise can be observed, such as closed beaches, uncommon closed estuaries developed inside a sinkhole, blowholes produced by mixed wave action and widening of prevailing vertical pipes inside the limestones (including the second largest in the world), total or partial sedimentary filling of small confined estuaries, as well as a tombolo deposit. It is important to point out, that some sites described are included in the Spanish Inventory of Sites of Geological Interest (IELIG). Due to the evolution model here proposed, a portion of the coastal sector described are included in the Global Geosites Project

    Atualmente muito se discute sobre como a Química é geralmente trabalhada no Ensino Médio: descontextualizada, sem relações com a sociedade e o cotidiano dos estudantes. Muitas vezes, o ensino se dá como se estivesse resumido à memorização de nomes complexos e aplicação de fórmulas na resolução de problemas sem relação com aspectos sociais da ciência. Para promover mudanças nesse cenário, é necessário um posicionamento crítico por parte de professores e estudantes e compreendemos que a utilização de abordagens CTS (Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade) no ensino de Química pode contribuir nesse sentido. A fim de colaborar com as reflexões sobre mudanças no foco da Educação Química, buscando formas de romper a barreira do ensino tradicional, apresentamos esse estudo no qual são mostrados a organização e aplicação de um Caso Simulado CTS em aulas de Química no Ensino Médio

    Generation of thermo-sensitive allele of the TPR like protein Nup211by PCR mutagenesis

    Motivation: TPR proteins are conserved large coiled-coil proteins that localize at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear pore complex and participate in multiple aspects of DNA metabolism. The protein Nup211, fission yeast homolog of Mlp1/Mlp2/Tpr, participate in the mRNA export and is essential for vegetative growth. The aim of this work is to create a collection of thermo-sensitive alleles of nup211.Methods: To create the collection, we have generated a new strain with the nup211 gen tagged with GFP at the amino terminal extreme and confirmed by fluorescent microscopy that the protein Nup211 localized in the nuclear envelop. Then, we have carried out a Taq PCR-based Random Mutagenesis with reduced concentration of dATP. The PCR products were transformed into a wild type strain to generate conditional mutants. The transformants obtained whose growth was impaired at 36ºC were preselected as thermo-sensitive mutants. To confirm the growth deficiency of these clones, a drop assay was performed and the best candidates were selected. These thermo-sensitive mutants were cultivated at 25ºC as well as 36ºC and both cultures were subjected to various experiments in order to study any changes in the localization of Nup211.Results: Up to now, we have demonstrated by fluorescent microscopy that the thermo-sensitive mutants show a modified nuclear distribution of Nup211 and different cellular phenotype, suggesting that the differents clones might represent differents nup211 thermo-sensitive alleles. These alleles are going to be subjected to various experiments to clarify the role of the protein in the mRNA export

    Impact of Acute Dietary Manipulations on Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Estimates of Visceral Adipose Tissue

    Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is viewed as a superior method of body composition assessment, but whole-body DXA scans are impacted by variation in pre-assessment activities, such as eating and drinking. DXA software now allows for estimation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), which has been implicated in a number of diseases. It is unknown to what extent food and fluid intake affect VAT estimates. PURPOSE: determine the effects of acute high-carbohydrate (HC) and very low-carbohydrate (VLC) diets on DXA estimates of VAT. METHODS: Male and female adults completed two one-day dietary conditions in random order: a VLC diet (1 – 1.5 g CHO/kg) and a HC diet (9 g CHO/kg). The diets were isocaloric to each other, and all food items were provided to participants. DXA scans were conducted in the morning after an overnight fast and in the afternoon soon after the third standardized meal. VAT volume, mass, and area were obtained, and paired samples t-tests were performed to compare the changes in VAT measures between diets. RESULTS: Fifteen males (age 22 ± 3, BF% 21 ± 5%) and eighteen females (age 21 ± 2, BF% 31 ± 5%) were included in the analysis. The change in VAT volume between the fasted and fed visits was different between diets (HC: +1.6%; VLC: -9.2%, p= 0.047). There were also trends for differences in VAT mass (p= 0.089) and area (p= 0.096) changes between diets. CONCLUSIONS: Within a single day, VAT estimates are differentially affected by isocaloric HC and VLC diets, with VLC consumption leading to reductions in VAT estimates. The content of the diet on the day of a DXA scan can affect estimates of VAT, which could spuriously influence the categorization of an individual’s health risk by DXA VAT estimates. Standardization of food intake prior to scans, preferably in the form of an overnight fast, should be employed to eliminate this important source of error

    Habitat use and conservation status of birds from El Paraíso wetland, Lima, Peru

    Las aves son el grupo taxonómico más representativo de los humedales. En la costa central peruana muchos de estos ecosistemas se encuentran seriamente afectados por actividades antropogénicas. Con el objetivo de brindar información que contribuya a la implementación de planes de manejo y conservación de la avifauna del humedal El Paraíso se evaluó las preferencias y usos de los dos hábitats acuáticos presentes en el humedal, la laguna salobre y la zona cenagosa. Se llevaron a cabo evaluaciones mensuales desde mayo del 2009 a marzo del 2010 utilizando el método de puntos de conteo. Se observaron 68 especies que hicieron uso directo de los hábitats de estudio. Las familias más abundantes fueron Anatidae (19.2%), Laridae (18.0%), Phalacrocoracidae (16.8%) y Rallidae (16.1%). La especie más abundante fue Phalacrocorax brasilianus (16.7%), seguida de la Fulica ardesiaca (13.0%). Se encontró marcada diferencias en la composición de aves entre los dos hábitats evaluados debido, principalmente, a la  presencia de especies migratorias boreales quienes prefieren el hábitat cenagoso. Por otro lado, fueron identificados los sitios de anidamiento de especies representativas del humedal tales como Phalacrocorax brasilianus, Tachuris rubrigastra, Phleocryptes melanops, Charadrius nivosus. La actividad frecuentemente registrada fue el descanso (73.9%), seguido de la alimentación (23.4%) y la reproducción (2.73%). Constituyen las principales amenazas para el humedal; la caza deportiva, quema de totorales y juncales, tránsito de vehículos por la orilla marina y desechos de residuos sólidos dejados por los bañistas.Birds are the most representative group of wetlands. In the Central Peruvian coast many of these ecosystems are severely affected by anthropogenic activities, for instance, El Paraíso wetland. The aim of this study is to evaluate the preferences and habitat uses of two aquatic bodies: brackish lagoon and marshy area at El Paraíso Wetland, in order to gather information for the implementation of management plans and conservation of this wetland. From May 2009 to March 2010, we carried out monthly assessment by point counts technique. We identified 68 species that made direct use of the studied habitats. The most abundant families were Anatidae (19.2%), Laridae (18.0%), Phalacrocoracidae (16.8%) and Rallidae (16.1%). The most abundant species was Phalacrocorax brasilianus (16.7%), followed by the Fulica ardesiaca (13.0%). We found marked differences in the composition of birds’ communities between the two evaluated habitats, which mainly occurred due to the presence of boreal migratory species that prefer swampy habitat. Nesting sites of representative species of wetland such as, Phalacrocorax brasilianus, Tachuris rubrigastra, Phleocryptes melanops and Charadrius nivosus were recorded. The most common bird activity recorded was resting (73.9%), followed by feeding (23.4%) and breeding (2.73%). The main threats to the wetland are, hunting, burning (cattails and rushes), vehicular traffic by seashore, solid waste and debris left by the swimmers

    Brachial Artery FMD and Endothelial Responses to High-Intensity Interval and Steady-State Moderate-Intensity Exercise

    Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is a nitric oxide-dependent measure of conduit artery endothelial function that is potentiated by moderate- and high-intensity steady state exercise (SSE) for up to an hour after exercise; however, it is unclear whether high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) provides a longer-lasting stimulus for enhancing FMD or greater oxidative and nitrative stress on the vascular endothelium than a comparable or greater amount of SSE. PURPOSE: Determine the influence of HIIE on post-exercise brachial artery FMD and the relationship between FMD and markers of endothelial function relative to a comparable amount of moderate-intensity SSE and a dose that is half that of SSE. METHODS: Seventeen male participants (age 27.8 + 6.4 yr; weight 80.6 + 9.0 kg; BMI 25.1 + 2.4 kg/m2; VO2max 52.1 + 7.5 ml/kg/min) underwent HIIE by treadmill running (90% and 40% of VO2reserve in 3:2 min ratio) to expend 500 kcals; HIIE to expend 250 kcals, and; SSE at 70% VO2reserve to expend 500 kcals in a randomized crossover design. All exercise conditions averaged 70% VO2reserve. Ultrasound measurements of brachial artery FMD and blood measures of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in copper reducing equivalents, apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA1: g/L), PON1 concentration (PON1c: mg/mL), arylesterase activity (PON1a: kU/L), soluble vascular adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1: ng/mL) and nitrotyrosine (NT: nM) were obtained just before and 2 hr after exercise. FMD responses to exercise were analyzed using 3 (condition) by 2 (sample point) repeated measures ANOVAs. Pearson product-moment correlations of change variables (2 hr post-exercise – pre-exercise values) were calculated to determine relationships between FMD responses and blood variable responses to exercise. RESULTS: Brachial artery FMD responses were unaltered 2 hr after exercise in all three conditions (p \u3e 0.05). FMD responses were correlated with changes in PON1c (r = 0.221, p \u3c 0.0001) and inversely with changes TAC (r = -0.170, p \u3c 0.0001). Changes in s-VCAM1 were correlated with change in NT (r = 0.423, p \u3c 0.0001) and inversely with changes in PON1c (r = -0.177, p \u3c 0.0001). SUMMARY: Brachial artery FMD is unaltered 2 hr after HIIE or SSE of moderate duration in young fit men and does not appear to be related to responses in other markers of endothelial function
